In the mountains in north-west Bali we visited an absolutely unique place: the private retreat Sumberkima Hills. Only a 3 hour drive from the airport, this jewel is located in the middle of nature.
Around Sumberkima there are beautiful natural landscapes, a varied underwater world and exciting temples to discover.
We couldn't wait to drive up the hill and into Villa Bali Mynah. Deciding which villa to book was not easy for us.
Currently 42 different type of accommodation from budget rooms to 5 bedroom private pool villas are accessible.
Each villa is unique in design, views and amenities. From traditional joglos to minimalist homes to stylish artistic pads, there is a range of villas that dot the hillside, each offering a different vibe.
Villa Bali Mynah had 2 large bedrooms and beautiful open bathrooms with tropical showers. From the open plan living area we had a gorgeous view that we couldn't get enough of.
Each villa has its own pool, but if you have had enough privacy, you might as well use one of the two large community pools. Both are so breathtaking that you will want to take some impressive photos right away.
There are also low budget rooms without a private pool, but not far from the community pools.
In 2015, Jane Hudepohl and her husband Bernard who is the designer and landscaper of the retreat, started this wonderful project with just six villas. Now there are more than 42 different, individually furnished villas, and rooms all of which are privately owned and carefully managed by the Sumberkima Hill team. Many other villas are already in the planning stage.
The villas leave nothing to be desired and offer everything you need for a relaxing holiday, from an infinity pool to a roof terrace and a jungle shower. A lot of value is placed on organic cultivation and cooperation with people from the nearby village. Juices, jam and many other products are made directly in-house.
Each villa has its own kitchen, so you can cook here or you can simply visit one of the two restaurants and enjoy the freshly prepared delicacies. Of course, meals can also be ordered to your own villa.
If you are looking for even more relaxation, then a visit to the open spa, where you can also enjoy a massage, should definitely be on the to-do list. You can also join a yoga class several times a week.
For more action there is the opportunity to canoe, snorkel, dive, SUP and more down in the bay!
There's a white sand island, Gili Putih, which hosts dinner parties, sunset barbecues, on-demand yoga classes and other exciting events, and a floating fish farm.
Of course, divers in north-west Bali also get their money's worth, the famous dive site Menjangan Island is part of the protected national park and only 20 minutes away!
You should definitely include this unique spot in your next trip to Bali.
